Through a first-of-its-kind collaboration by the State of Illinois, PCs for People, and various community partners, Illinois launched a statewide network to receive, refurbish and redistribute used computers to those in need. This initiative responded to the 1.1 million Illinois households without computers and aims to bridge the digital divide for those without internet access to help improve connectivity essential for remote learning, work from home, telemedicine, and other requirements of everyday life.
Illinois is the first to develop a statewide computer equity network devoted to collection of used computers from public and private sectors — matched with a state contribution as well — for a multi-year commitment to distribute thousands of upgraded devices to Illinois communities on an annual basis.
To be eligible for purchase from PCs for People, customers must be currently participating in a government-based assistance program or have a qualifying household income (less than 200% of federal poverty guidelines or 60% of area median income).
