Bridging the Digital Divide Together: Our Growing Partnership with Alliant Credit Union/Foundation

At PCs for People, our mission is to ensure that everyone, regardless of income, has access to the tools, connectivity, and skills that modern life demands. We are proud to partner with organizations who share that vision. One of our most meaningful and productive collaborators is the Alliant Credit Union and its philanthropic arm, the Alliant Foundation.

Alliant and PCs for People are not just partners but they are also a community anchored in the “5 Cs for Digital Inclusion”: computers, connectivity, content, community, and capacity. Together, we tackle all five:

  • Computers – by collecting, refurbishing, and redistributing hardware

  • Connectivity – by facilitating low-cost internet access in underserved areas

  • Content – by supporting digital literacy and training

  • Community – by activating membership networks, employees, and volunteers

  • Capacity – by scaling operations, driving awareness, and measuring impact

Over the years, that synergy has translated into measurable wins. Below are some standout metrics and stories from our journey together.

Record-Breaking Donation Drives & Device Recovery

Spring 2025: 10,137 LBs raised
In May 2025, the Alliant Foundation and PCs for People eclipsed previous records with a spring donation drive that generated 10,137 pounds of retired electronics—laptops, desktops, monitors, peripherals—for refurbishment and redeployment.
This was the largest single donation event in Alliant’s history.

Fall / ongoing drives: 7,084+ Lbs collected at HQ alone
In September 2025, Alliant’s headquarters in Chicago alone collected 7,084 pounds of devices. The PCs for People truck visited Alliant HQ 17 times to load and pick up donated equipment.
That same initiative engaged not just employees, but also Alliant members and community partners.

Long-term impact: diverting e-waste, repowering homes
By design, each device donated avoids landfill and becomes an opportunity. Alliant’s 2023 annual report cites that in two digital-divide drives, they collected and recycled over 17 tons of laptops, tablets, smartphones, and components with help from members and employees.
In previous years, Alliant and PCs for People have collected 8 to 10 tons of devices in joint drives.

From Devices to Digital Opportunity: Real-World Outcomes

Collecting 10,000+ pounds of hardware is impressive—but what does it mean for real people?

  • Devices refurbished & redistributed
The 10,137 lbs from the 2025 spring drive translated into hundreds of units refurbished and placed into the hands of low-income individuals and families nationwide.
In prior campaigns, Alliant’s drives supported PCs for People in delivering devices to more than 1,300 families in a single year and 400 more than the year before.

  • Digital access & opportunity
Equipping homes with computers is a cornerstone, but pairing that with affordable internet and training drives long-term change. PCs for People’s model ensures that recipients don’t just get devices but they get long-term connectivity and support.

  • Sustainability and community engagement
Alliant’s commitment to these drives not only boosts impact but strengthens community awareness and participation. Their members, employees, and volunteers play direct roles in saving devices from waste and turning them into opportunity.

In Gratitude & Vision Ahead: Celebrating Digital Inclusion Week 2025

As we celebrate Digital Inclusion Week 2025, the partnership between PCs for People and Alliant Credit Union stands as a powerful example of what true collaboration can achieve. This year’s theme, Community-Driven Digital Futures,” perfectly reflects the heart of our work together.

Through ongoing donation drives, volunteer engagement, and community-centered impact, Alliant embodies the “Community” within our 5 Cs of Connectivity. Together, we’re proving that digital inclusion is not just about distributing computers or internet—it’s about creating belonging, opportunity, and empowerment.

Every pound of recycled tech, every refurbished device, and every newly connected household tells a story of transformation. And during Digital Inclusion Week, we’re proud to shine a light on Alliant and every partner helping to close the digital divide one connection, one community at a time.
