PCs for People Partners with Microsoft to Support Nonprofit Computer Refurbishers

PCs for People has launched an innovative program in collaboration with Microsoft to support the work of nonprofit computer refurbishers. This initiative is aimed at providing high-quality, secure, and authentic software on refurbished computers, ensuring individuals in need have access to essential digital resources. Through this partnership, Microsoft has extended Authorized Refurbisher (MAR) status to PCs for People, enabling the organization to offer low-cost Windows and Office licenses on computers distributed to vulnerable communities worldwide. All proceeds from this program contribute to the mission of bridging the digital divide.

The COVID-19 pandemic revealed the urgent need for technology access, with millions of Americans facing barriers to essential digital tools.

Microsoft’s partnership with PCs for People acknowledges this challenge, positioning them as a key player in device equity. This MAR program ensures that nonprofit refurbishers can deliver refurbished computers loaded with affordable, genuine software to those most in need.

It is an honor to be recognized by Microsoft and to provide our industry with a solution to device equity,” said Casey Sorensen, CEO of PCs for People.

“I received my first computer at nine years old, which inspired my career in IT. The pandemic has shown that millions of children lack the same opportunity.”

One nonprofit benefiting from the program is Wilderness Technology Alliance in Washington, DC, which provides low-cost Windows licenses for refurbished computers distributed to community members on the city’s food stamp program.

“Microsoft Windows and Office are essential to our refurbishing operation because our computers go to low-income individuals seeking computer skills for employment,” said Lou August, of Wilderness Technology Alliance. “The knowledge of Windows and Office is vital in today’s workplace, and proceeds support digital equity, making this a win-win-win for everyone.”
