Along with school closings, prisons are also suspending visitations. Families of prisoners are now unable to make that vital connection. PCs for People Ohio is responding to the technology need after Ohio DRC made the difficult decision to suspend in-person visitation in response to COVID-19.
It is known that maintaining family ties through visits is an effective way to reduce recidivism. Visits keep families together and potentially prevent family-breakdown. Visits and the maintenance of family ties can help prevent intergenerational offending.
After visitations where canceled, PCs for People Ohio received a call from a mother who's son is currently waiting for sentencing. Being totally disconnected from her son was an unimaginable thought to process. Ohio DRC opened up video conferencing to help families connect with inmates but homes without a computer and internet would not be able to take advantage of this alternative. Our staff put together a package with a desktop and internet so she could remain connected with her son during this isolating time.
"I didn't know what to think. I haven't seen my son for two months and I couldn't imagine not being able to see him. I am so happy that I can see him and talk to him again."
PCs for People is happy to support families connecting through video visitation while Ohio DRC has made the difficult decision to suspend in-person visitation in response to COVID-19.
